A wise woman once said that women run the world. Yes, I’m referring to Mrs. Carter, the one and only Beyoncé. And you know what? She was right. I mean, we invented the dishwasher for crying out loud. What would men do without us?
The strongest women out there are the ones that are standing up for other women and looking out for their needs. And the following list of products invented for women, by other women, just proves that we are powerhouses in the social world, in the world of business, and we are incredible entrepreneurial creatures.
1. Makeup for every skin tone
Honestly, it’s annoying that Rihanna is not only an international pop superstar but also a wildly successful businesswoman through her makeup brand Fenty Beauty. Just pick one thing to excel at! We’ll let it slide this one time though, as her foundation line produces 40 different shades, allowing all women, no matter their color, to get a tiny glimpse into the glam world of Ri-Ri.
2. Oprah-approved undergarments
Spanx has quite literally been supporting women for 18 years. Invented under the notion that undergarments should be just as comfortable and flattering as outerwear, these simple yet genius items have taken the world by storm. The true mark of their success should be that inventor Sara Blakely is one of the youngest self-made female billionaires in the world because of them. We know they’re good because both Oprah AND Michelle Obama have given their seals of approval. But really we tried them ourselves and can attest to their fabulousness.
3. Organic tampons delivered to your door
Women understand women the best. That’s why Jordana Kier and Alexandra Friedman founded Lola tampons, 100% natural tampons that get delivered straight to your door every month. Because they know that women don’t want to be putting pesticides into their bodies. Other brands have tampons that contain toxins, dyes, and synthetic fibers, but Lola tampons are made with one thing only: organic cotton. But are they worth it? Our writer, Sara, tested them and found that they were just as comfortable and effective as bigger name brands. They’re a little bit more expensive (at $10 for an 18-pack instead of under $5 for Tampax), but the ordering process is easy and the eco-friendly lifestyle change makes them worth the markup.
4. The closet of your dreams
Founders Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Fleiss founded Rent the Runway in 2009 as a rental service for designer dresses and accessories. Today, people can rent anything from dresses to everyday clothing to bags to home decor for a 4- or 8- day period—or they can subscribe to a monthly membership, called Rent the Runway Unlimited, where they can rent a certain amount of items at a time on a rotating bases. Our shopping expert, Sam, has been an Unlimited member for four years and swears by the service.
5. A colorful razor subscription
Two words: Billie razors. These babies are all over the internet, and for good reason. These colorful razors are delivered to you whenever you’re in need of a replacement. Our lifestyle writer, Jess, tried them and found them to be very effective and left her skin silky smooth. But moreso, she was blown away by the brand’s mission. Billie celebrates “our choice to be shaggy, smooth or anything in between.” In addition, the company is taking a stand against the pink tax (the extra amount women are charged for some products and services) in the shaving industry, long ruled by men. The inclusive, women-first brand also makes all products vegan, non-GMO, and gluten-free which helps if you have sensitive skin. Sign me up.
6. Fabulous, high-quality workout apparel
One of the biggest hurdles to actually working out is getting into your workout clothes, amiright? They symbolize the energy you’re about to exert, which can be daunting. But with Fabletics, you want to wear your workout apparel and sweat and exhaust yourself. Fabletics is a workout clothes subscription service that allows you to choose stylish, high-quality workout apparel from the comfort of your home. Our audience development manager, Rachel, tried it and she said that the fabulous outfits inspired her to workout harder than ever before because when you look good, you feel good. Another reason she loves the brand so much is because it was co-founded by actress Kate Hudson, who she is obsessed with, but that is neither here nor there. The workout clothes are durable, come in a wide variety of colors and styles, and the subscription itself is very easy to follow (and lets you pause whenever you want!).
This tiny tool has taken the world by storm and for good reason. Invented by a professional makeup artist, the beautyblender allows users to apply makeup like a pro, without any weird streaks or lines. As one Amazon reviewer so eloquently puts it “I finally gave in and bought it and immediately regretted ever doubting those girls on YouTube who never stopped talking about it.” Yep, the hype is real.
8. A ubiquitous millennial beauty brand
The makeup brand heard ’round the world is Glossier. It was founded by Emily Weiss, who took her beauty blog to Instagram and built a billion dollar business. It’s known for its low-effort skincare and no-makeup makeup that leaves your skin feeling healthy, and not just covered up. People swear notably by two of their products, Boy Brow and the Milky Jelly Cleanser. Our staff loves Glossier makeup and is quick to try new lines of their makeup whenever they’re launched.
9. The future of feminine hygiene
Anyone who has ever had to deal with a feminine hygiene product knows that they are expensive, not eco-friendly and depending on your body, something you have to constantly be replacing throughout the day. The DivaCup offers the solution of an earth friendly, 12 hour leak free period product. Why the name? The inventors used the Italian origins of diva, where it was originally used to describe a female deity, a powerful woman whose talent resembles that of the gods. Finally, a company that truly appreciates women so much that they name it after how powerful we are.
10. Saving grace for thigh chafing
Chub rub can be excruciating. Some of us curvier ladies love wearing dresses, but it’s just not worth the discomfort of the thigh chafing that comes with it. That’s why Bandelettes were born, when two women decided that they’d had enough of thigh chafing and wanted to put an end to it—in a stylish way. Their goal is to “create comfortable and sexy lingerie that is both practical and beautiful – to help embrace curves and enhance self-confidence”. You simply pull the Bandelettes up onto your thighs and the fabric rubs together, instead of your thigh skin. Our video producer, Melissa, tested them and found that they significantly reduced the friction between her thighs and were well-worth the money.
