J.C. Penney Co. to furlough most of 95,000 employees

Add one more major retailer to the growing list announcing furloughs to weather the coronavirus pandemic.

J.C. Penney Company said Tuesday it will furlough most of their store employees. The company employs about 95,000 workers.

J.C. Penney also said it would extend the temporary closure of stores and business offices because of COVID-19.

“These are difficult days all across the country and the globe,” said CEO Jill Soltau in a statement. “At JCPenney, we are making tough, prudent decisions to protect both the safety of our associates and the future of our company.”

The company said all furloughed employees will retain their health benefits.

Neiman Marcus, Macy’s and The Cheesecake Factory also have recently announced furloughs for many of their employees.
