Department stores Macy’s, Nordstrom and Bloomingdale’s are closing all stores because of the coronavirus. Online stores will remain open.
At the end of business Tuesday, Macy’s Inc. said it would close all stores including Bloomingdale’s locations through March 31. Store websites will remain open for shopping anytime.
“The health and safety of our customers, colleagues and communities is our utmost priority. As a result of the recent COVID-19 developments, we have decided to temporarily close our stores,” Jeff Gennette, Macy’s Inc. chairman and CEO, said in a news release. “We will work with government and health officials to assess when we will reopen our stores and safely bring our colleagues back to work.”

Macy’s, Inc. says it “will provide benefits and compensation to its impacted workforce.”
As of Macy’s fourth quarter, the company said it had 775 stores, which include Bloomingdale’s stores and Bluemercury beauty stores.
Nordstrom also announced that its stores would close for two weeks.
“The situation is changing rapidly, and to do our part in slowing the spread of the virus, we have decided to temporarily close all our stores,” Nordstrom executives Erik and Pete Nordstrom wrote in a post on the company’s website. “The two-week closure will go into effect on Tuesday, March 17. This decision includes all our U.S. and Canada stores.”
Meanwhile, J.C. Penney and Kohl’s currently say they are reducing store hours.
