Waffle House closes 418 restaurants as coronavirus spreads

Updated: Waffle House has increased the number of restaurants closed since this story was first published.

Waffle House, the restaurant chain known for having its own unofficial index used during natural disasters, said it’s closing 418 of its restaurants.

In various social media posts, the chain featured a map showing the 418 closed restaurants, while another 1,574 across the southeastern U.S. remained open. The posts also featured the hashtag “#WaffleHouseIndexRed.

The chain did not say whether the closures were linked to the coronavirus pandemic. Waffle House could not be immediately reached for comment.

The chain is known for having its own “Waffle House Index” used during natural disasters to assess damage. If a store is closed, it’s likely in an area with significant damage.

Waffle House had noted in earlier social media posts its locations were still open for carryout, as many restaurants across the country shut down dine-in options to curb the spread of COVID-19.

As of Wednesday, there were more than 55,000 cases of coronavirus in the U.S., with a death toll at 802.
