What people are ordering online during coronavirus crisis

Retailers are grappling with surges in online orders and consumers are starting to see more “out of stock messages” in the age of coronavirus, according to a new study by Adobe Analytics.

The research firm analyzed data from trillions of visits to retail websites and from millions of product SKUs, finding that online grocery purchases are leading the eCommerce boom. 

Among the most popular items in people’s internet shopping carts: Health products, gym equipment, toilet paper and canned foods. 

Overall online sales have jumped 25% amidst the COVID-19 crisis, while online grocery shopping has seen an over 100% boost in daily sales. 

Categories related to virus protection products such as gloves, masks and hand sanitizers have surged 807%, the study found. Over-the-counter drug purchases rose 217%.

Online orders for fitness equipment like kettlebells, dumbbells and treadmills a saw 55% boost after gyms started shutting down across the country to slow the spread of the outbreak.

As a response to people practicing social distancing in late February to mid-March, retailers bolstered their in-store pickup options and it may have worked. Online orders for in-store pickup rose 62% over last year, Adobe Analytics found.
